iPhone 3G Review - Why I love the app store

On Thursday afternoon, I got a phone call from my local ATT store telling me that my iPhone 3G had arrived. I had to utilize the order fulfillment process that was initiated because of the huge demand that the iPhone has carried since it was released about a month ago, so I was extremely excited to pickup my first iPhone!

After unpacking the iPhone, it was everything that I expected. A very slick box; great presentation, and all of the necessary accessories included (ear buds, charger cable, cleaning cloth).

The phone performs great. I quickly fell in love the the touch screen - something that some other people said was a hassle to use or was not as responsive as it could have been. Mastering the mechanics of it took only a short while.

Thinking that I had become a master of it, I did what most people did shortly after getting their new iPhone. I poped on over to the app store to see what cool apps I could download. Naturally - Wordpress for iPhone was the very first one, followed by Pandora, Facebook, and Google Mobile.

I have been playing around with the app store, and I really love everything about it. What would make it an even more effective tool for someone like me, would be the ability to  have a custom app created that I could launch on only my iPhone, for specific tasks that I would like my iPhone to perform. Have some way to personalize the app store with private apps, and making the availability of the developers toolkit for making apps would really make the app store experience a true platform. Imagine having the ability to make a custom app for your phone that could open your garage door, pay for gas at the pump as a debit/credit card, or even record a video! (Apple didn’t include a video recording feature with the iPhone)

So far, my favorite as has got to be the Wordpress for iPhone app. When I think about it, the ability to remotely publish media (content and images) is of huge importance in the blogging community; something that is very new and exciting. Infact, these screen shot images taken from my iPhone were added “on the go”, and the post right now is being published with the iPhone. Sure - typing all of this out takes a little longer on iPhone than it would on a computer, but the fact that I can be anywhere in the world doing this is really cool.

Update: I just read an article on Mashable about this very topic. It looks like they agree that the app store will be the reason for the lasting success of the iPhone.
